Naga Vamsi Confirms Vijay Deverakonda Sequel Scrapped After Lukewarm Box Office

Kingdom 2 officially shelved: producer Naga Vamsi confirms

The planned sequel to Vijay Deverakonda’s 2025 spy thriller Kingdom will not be happening, producer Naga Vamsi confirmed in a recent interview with Idlebrain. The decision follows the first film’s lukewarm run at the box office and effectively ends hopes of building a franchise around Suri, Deverakonda’s constable-turned-spy character.

    Why the sequel was scrapped

Kingdom, directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri and released in July 2025, was written in a way that could have led to future instalments. Despite that setup and high expectations, the film failed to generate strong commercial traction. When asked about a follow-up, Vamsi was blunt: “No, we are not making it anymore.”

He added that revisiting why the film underperformed would only do more harm than good. “There is no point in talking about what happened because it’ll only hurt Gowtam. There’s nothing more to do now,” Vamsi told the portal, signalling a desire to move on rather than rehash past setbacks.

What this means for the team

Although Kingdom 2 is off the table, Vamsi made it clear his professional relationship with director Gowtam Tinnanuri remains intact. “But yeah, we will collaborate with Gowtam. He is doing a different film now,” he said, hinting that the creative partnership will continue in new directions outside the Kingdom universe.

For Vijay Deverakonda, the shelving of the sequel is a setback but not the end of the road. After a few recent box-office disappointments, he had hoped Kingdom would be a turning point. The actor already has other projects lined up, including the action film Rowdy Janardhana, directed by Ravi Kiran Kola, which is slated for release in 2026.

Fan reactions and industry ripple effects

Fans who were excited about Suri’s future adventures will be disappointed, but the decision also reflects a wider industry reality: studios are cautious about investing in sequels when the original doesn’t perform as expected. Shelving a high-profile follow-up can protect the creative team from the pressures of forcing a franchise that may not have an audience.

    Looking ahead

    • Gowtam Tinnanuri appears to be moving on to a new project with the backing of producer Naga Vamsi.
    • Vijay Deverakonda will focus on upcoming commitments such as Rowdy Janardhana (2026).
    • Fans will likely watch the careers of the film’s key players closely to see how they bounce back from this disappointment.

While Kingdom 2 won’t be joining the release calendar, the core team’s next moves — both creative and commercial — will determine whether any of the film’s ideas find life in different forms down the line.
